I think that I have found Heaven here on Earth. I felt the same about Mataranka and Bitter Springs in the NT and now I have found my new happy place, which is thankfully, only about an hour from where I live. Enter Rose Valley. Nestled in the hills between Kiama and Gerringong (closer to Gerringong) and away from all the hustle and bustle but 5 mins from the freeway, is an absolute oasis of a valley set amongst the picturesque hills of the Illawarra’s south coast. I picked a real airbnb gem and yes, quite possibly, my new favourite getaway ever.
This place was right up my alley. While my husband prefers 5 star resorts I love rustic cabins, meandering livestock and bubbling creeks. Give me a starry sky, fire and simple living any day. It’s about as good as you can get aside from sleeping in a tent while listening to birds or rain outside.
This was my birthday treat to myself and exceeded my expectations. A very special property that I am happy to shamelessly promote sported a barn style cottage house suitable for sleeping 4 with a very simple kitchen, bathroom and composting toilet. The little front porch overlooked a grassy stretch with clucking chickens and a gateway leading to a small orchard. The property is surrounded by these incredible stone walls which seem to be a defining feature of the main properties on site as well.
My absolute favourite part of this property, however, is the outdoor bath which is heated by fire. Once we got the kids FINALLY to bed, the clouds parted and we enjoyed a hot bath under a starry sky with the fire going next to us. Bliss! I am completely romanticising this place because for me, it was the epitome of romance and I can’t wait to get back there (with no kids!). No reception or wifi, tv channels or noise aside from nature, it was a lovely way to spend my birthday.
I loved exploring the grounds with my son and hunting for chickens, cows, horses and ‘lions’. I we spent lots of time washing spiderman in the creek and throwing stones. And we didn’t even get a chance to explore the two waterfalls that are on site! Definitely a must next time when it is hopefully not as wet or slippery.
Within a 5 minute drive you’re in Gerringong, and we grabbed a drink from one of the many cafes and spent time wandering around the playground and park off the main road. Gerringong is a lovely little town with a short main street which is well worth a visit. I also fell in love with sweetest (& most reasonably priced) gift shop …. on the other side of the park.
Kiama is also a ten minute drive and with the extra swell caused by an offshore cyclone up north, the Kiama Blowhole was producing some pretty awesome action. Lots more oohs and aahs from impressed viewers, than would usually be heard. This time our 2 year old was suitably impressed!
Kiama is another & bigger seaside town south of Wollongong that is also definitely worth a visit. Loads of places to eat and stroll along the foreshore with a huge park area and boutique gift shops.
Rose Valley was the perfect place to stay to access these two lovely little towns and also offer us a peaceful weekend and some quality family time.
Please check out the fab property we stayed at here (airbnb).
